Doing it the other way round

The same trains make Florence a comfortable day from a Lucca base, and the last direct return leaves Lucca in the evening rather than mid-afternoon, so you are not forced to choose between the walls and dinner. Take the 08:09 and you are through the Porta San Pietro gate by 09:45. Rent a bicycle at one of the gate-side hire shops and ride the rampart loop first: 4.2 km, an easy 40 minutes with stops, and it gives you the plan of the whole town from above before you walk into it. Come down at Piazzale Verdi, cut through to Piazza dell'Anfiteatro — the oval of houses built into the shell of the Roman amphitheatre — and take the narrow passage out on the north side into Via Fillungo.

Book the Guinigi tower slot for late morning if you are there on a weekday, or reserve it before you travel if it is a weekend or a holiday, when booking is obligatory rather than recommended. It is 230 steps to the roof garden and there is no lift. After lunch inside the walls, the Cathedral of San Martino takes an hour: the Volto Santo, the Ilaria del Carretto tomb, and the €10 combined ticket that also opens the bell tower, the Cathedral Museum and San Giovanni e Reparata. That leaves the 17:31 or the 18:31 back to Florence with time for a coffee on Piazza San Michele first.

If the towers are the point of your trip, invert the day: tower first at 10:00 when it opens, walls in the afternoon light. If you have children, skip the tower queue entirely and spend the extra hour on the bicycles — the loop is car-free the whole way round, which is not true of anywhere in Florence.

The walls are the reason to come. Built between the middle of the sixteenth century and the middle of the seventeenth, they form a complete bastioned ring around the historic centre, 4.2 km of it, long since turned into an elevated promenade with grassed ramparts and avenues of trees. The Comune presents them as an urban park: no ticket office, no gate, no opening hours listed anywhere on the official page. The only tariff Lucca publishes for the walls covers commercial use — events, ceremonies, vehicle access — not visitors on foot or on a bicycle.

The two civic towers are the opposite case: both publish their measurements and their winter hours, neither publishes a price. Torre Guinigi is 44 m and 230 steps, with the oak trees on the roof that appear on every photograph of Lucca; entry runs in staggered timed shifts, reservations are recommended on weekdays and required at weekends and on holidays, and there is no lift, so the roof garden is out of reach for visitors with limited mobility. Torre delle Ore is 207 steps up a wooden staircase to the clock mechanism, on the same winter timetable and with the same booking rule. Both state that an entrance fee is required; both route the amount to the ticket portal at cultura.comune.lucca.it, which shows it only inside the booking widget. A figure of €8 circulates in the press. It is not on an official page, so we do not print it as one.

The cathedral complex is the one place in town with a full published price list, and it is generous: €10 buys the Cathedral of San Martino, its bell tower, the Cathedral Museum and the church of San Giovanni e Reparata on one ticket.

Yes, with one condition: come for the town, not for the art. Lucca has no gallery on the scale of anything in Florence, and a visitor who spends the day looking for one leaves disappointed. What it has instead is a flat, walled, almost car-free centre you can cross in fifteen minutes, a rampart park nobody else in Italy has, and a pace that makes the 11:00 to 16:00 crush in Florence feel like a different country.

The honest caveat is the same one that applies to every walled town in Tuscany: between late morning and mid-afternoon the centre fills with coach groups, and Via Fillungo in August is not a quiet street. Two things fix it — the early train, and the ramparts, which almost nobody climbs. Ride the loop at 10:00 and you will pass runners, prams and school groups rather than tour flags.

If you have only one day free and you are choosing between towns, the split is straightforward. Lucca is for walking, cycling and eating; the tower square west of here is for the photograph and the climb. Driving is the option that goes wrong. Lucca's historic centre inside the walls is closed to visitor traffic, so a car has to be parked outside the gates in a paid car park, and the walls are a ring road for pedestrians, not for vehicles. At the Florence end, the city's ZTL runs Monday to Friday 07:30–20:00 and Saturday 07:30–16:00, with a summer night ZTL Thursday to Saturday 23:00–03:00 from the first Thursday of April to the first Sunday of October; the fine amount is not stated on the city's page, and hotel guests have to give their number plate to reception to be registered.
